Free SFF book excerpts you need to check out

Let’s face it, adulting is hard work, and sometimes, we do go through days when we are too busy to read, and if not, we might just be too tired to read by bedtime. A day without reading, is a day wasted, so I have compiled here, a small list of free excerpts from books that you can read online.

The book covers link to Goodreads as well, so you can click on through.

OCEAN’S ECHO by Everina Maxwell

This book is a standalone space adventure that is set in the same world as Winter’s Orbit, the author’s debut. I have not read it, but I am really curious because most reviewers I know are trying to get their hands on a copy of this book. I read this excerpt, and am certainly intrigued. Find it here, on the Tor/Forge blog. It comes out on 1 November via Tor Books in the U.S, and via Orbit in the U.K.

I had the privilege to read a review copy and I really loved it. I probably won’t stop endorsing this for a while, but I do suggest that any potential readers look closely at the content warnings before they pick this up. That being said, I think the author has very sensitively handled them in this book. Find an excerpt here on the Tor/Forge blog, and my review here. This book was released on the 26th of July this year.

THE WITCH AND THE TSAR by Olesya Salnikova Gilmore

I’ve been looking forward to this book for a while. It is a reclamation of the story of Baba Yaga, one of the most famous figured in Slavic folklore, in a historical fantasy setting. Read a free excerpt here. This book is coming out on the 20th of September in the U.S. via Ace Books and on the 8th of December in the U.K. via Harper Collins. Harper Collins was kind enough to give me a review copy, so I will review it here around the U.K. publication date.

LEGENDS AND LATTES by Travis Baldree

This wonderful slice-of-like high fantasy book is one that I loved, and is the story of an orc mercenary retiring to open a gnomish coffee shop in a city that has never heard of coffee. It was initially self-published, and will be published on the 8th of November by Tor Books. If you still haven’t bought into the hype, maybe this excerpt on the Tor/Forge blog will convince you.

I hope you like at least one of these excerpts, and that they turn into a definite book purchase. I have personally had days when I was just too drained from surviving the workday, or just doing a lot of errands, and these certainly helped me. They can really save you from that strange feeling you get when you don’t read anything that day, but can also be a great way to discover a potential favourite.
